Bread Crumbs

pankoI feel that this is the best “packaged” bread crumbs that you can get from the store for several reasons.  First, if you plan on frying your bread crumbs (whether you put them on meat or vegetables), these bread crumbs absorb very little oil; therefore, it is a much healthier option than other bread crumbs.  The first time I made chicken tenders using these Panko bread crumbs, I was amazed at how my hands were not greasy from touching them.  Plus, they are very crunchy.

Second, I like how very few ingredients are listed in these bread crumbs.  I use to use Progresso Bread Crumbs, but I stopped when I noticed that the length of their ingredients list was comparable to a novel….very long!  And not to mention I couldn’t even pronounce most of the ingredients in there.  Remember a couple of my rules about healthy eating:  If you can’t pronounce the ingredient, or if it is something you would not carry in your house, then don’t get it.

Here is the ingredients list of Kikkoman Panko Japanese Style Bread Crumbs:  Wheat flour, contains 2% or less of each of the following:  sugar, yeast, soybean oil, salt.

Although I’m not happy about soybean oil being in there (because it is a GMO), at least very little of it is in there.

* When reading ingredient lists, keep in mind that they are listed according to the amount in the product, with the highest amount ingredient listed first, and the least amount listed last.  Using the above Kikkoman Panko Bread Crumbs ingredient list, there is more wheat flour in the crumbs, with salt being the least amount.
